Sedge is a plant that looks like grass but likes wet feet. You find it in marshes, ditches, and along the edges of rivers and lakes. From a distance you might walk past it and think ‘grass,’ but if you roll a stem in your fingers it is often three-sided, not round, and the plant feels tougher, with its own little flower . People who walk , farmers, and use the word; most city speakers just say grass and never notice the difference. It is an old countryside word, not a fancy scientific one, though scientists do use sedge for a whole family of these wet-ground plants. Though actually, it has nothing to do with a sledge (a sled) or a hedge, even though those words sit near it on the page.
組成From Middle English segge, from Old English seċġ, from an old Germanic name for a marsh plant (Proto-Germanic *sagjaz, from a root for marsh plants). It does not split into English pieces. Dutch zegge and German Segge are cousins, not English relatives.
