The Seder is a special Jewish dinner held on the first night of Passover — and outside Israel, often on the second night as well. Families sit at the table and tell the old story of how the Jewish people left Egypt. The evening has a set path: certain foods, questions the children ask, songs, and cups of wine. The word itself is Hebrew for ‘order’: you do not just eat; you follow the order of the night. There is unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and a telling of the story so that each generation hears it. It is a home ritual more than a temple service, though it is deeply religious. In English we keep the Hebrew word and write it with a capital S, like a name. Though actually, it is not a general word for ‘a Jewish meal,’ and it is not the whole of Passover — Passover is the festival; the Seder is this ordered dinner that opens it.
