    If something is seaward, it faces the sea, or it moves toward the sea. You can use it before a noun (the seaward side of the island) or after a verb (they looked seaward). The opposite idea is — toward the land. The ending -ward means “in that direction,” the same piece you hear in toward, forward, and backward. It is a quiet, slightly formal word: sailors, map-makers, and people describing a coast use it more than people chatting in a shop. From Middle English seaward, built from sea + -ward.
