Seattle is a city and port in the northwest of the United States, in the state of Washington, beside the water. It is a big business city. Microsoft has its main offices in that area, and a lot of computer work grew up around it. People also know it for rain — the sky is often grey and wet — and for coffee; the famous coffee company Starbucks started there, and the city takes coffee seriously. Though actually, Microsoft’s main offices sit in Redmond, a town next to Seattle; people still say Seattle because they mean the whole Seattle area. The city is named after a Native leader, Chief Seattle. His own name, in the Lushootseed language of that coast, was siʔaɬ. English writers turned that into Seattle and gave it to the city.
