A seagoing ship is built to travel on the open sea, not only on a river or along the coast. River boats can be light; a seagoing ship has to be stronger, because the water is rough and the trip is long. People also speak of a seagoing life, meaning years spent working on ships that leave land far behind. The word feels a little formal; in everyday talk people often say ocean-going, or just that a ship goes to sea. Though actually, seagoing and seaworthy are not the same thing. Seaworthy means the ship is safe and in good repair right now. Seagoing means it is the kind of ship meant for the sea in the first place.
