    Seafaring means working or travelling on ships and the sea. As an adjective it sits in front of a noun: a seafaring nation, a seafaring family, a seafaring life. As a noun it names the work or the life itself: seafaring was hard. It sounds a little old or story-like, but writers still use it. Sailing is more about the act of going in a boat; seafaring is about the life and the work on the sea. It is not “seeing far”.

組成中古英語 safarinde / see farand 一路下來，相當於 sea + faring（travelling，行走中）。faring 來自 fare「走、旅行」。荷蘭語、德語、丹麥語、瑞典語也有很像的詞。名詞用法就是 sea + faring。
