    The seaboard is the part of a country that lies along the sea — a long stretch of land near the coast, not just one beach or one town. News and books, especially about the United States, say the eastern seaboard for the states that face the Atlantic. It sounds a little old or formal. In everyday talk many people just say the coast. Though actually it is about a region of a country, not the wet sand under your feet, and not the town street with ice-cream shops (that is closer to ).

組成較早寫成 sea-bord。也許接續中古英語 see bord（舷窗蓋、朝海的那一側），意思後來變成「靠海的陸地」。相當於 sea + board。這裡的 board 是「邊、側」，不是寫字的木板。
