The SDP was the Social Democratic Party, a British party that no longer exists. It was formed in 1981 by several well-known Labour MPs who felt their old party had become too left-wing. They wanted a gentler, middle-ground kind of social democracy. Dr David Owen is the leader people remember most. In the late 1980s most of its members joined with the Liberal Party to form the Social and Liberal Democrats, the party we now call the Liberal Democrats, or Lib Dems. So in a British history book, SDP is this 1980s breakaway — a short life, then a merger — not “social democratic party” as a type, and not a party in another country that happens to use the same three letters.
