A scrunchy is the soft hair band with cloth gathered loosely over a ring of elastic. You twist it around a so the hair stays up, but the fabric bunches and does not bite the way a hard plastic band can. Shops and packets more often spell it scrunchie; that is the same thing, not a different product. It is informal, everyday hair talk — a bit 1990s, and then fashionable again. Though actually the same spelling can be an adjective too (scrunchy fabric, a scrunchy texture), meaning a bit crushed and ; this entry is the hair thing. The cloth is doing the “scrunch”: it up as you wind it.
