A screwball is a person who seems very strange or a little crazy. They do not follow the usual rules of how people talk and act. The word is informal, and it is more American than British. It is often a bit fond — more “what a character” than a hard insult — but it can still sting if you say it about someone in the room. You also hear it as an adjective: a screwball idea, or screwball comedy, which is a kind of film that is fast, silly, and wild. Though actually, in baseball a screwball is also a throw that breaks the other way from a curveball; that odd, unexpected flight is probably why the word attached to odd people. This entry is the person, not the ball.
