A scramjet is a jet engine built for extremely fast flight — many times the speed of sound, in the picture people give you, more than ten times. An ordinary jet has spinning fans that pull air in. A ramjet has almost none of that: the craft’s own speed rams air into the engine. A scramjet is a ramjet that still burns its fuel while that air is moving faster than sound inside. That is hard to do, which is why you hear the word in science news and plane-and-rocket talk, not when you book a holiday flight. Working scramjets have mostly been test craft. Though actually people sometimes say scramjet as if it were the whole aircraft; strictly it is the engine. The name looks a little like scramble, but it is not from that word.
超燃衝壓引擎
組成Short for supersonic combustion ramjet: supersonic(比聲音還快)+ combustion(在引擎裡燃燒燃料)+ ramjet(靠飛行速度把空氣「撞」進去的噴射引擎)。
同家族的字
- ramjetthe older engine that rams air in by speed alone; a scramjet is that idea with the air still faster than sound while the fuel burns
