A scrambler is a machine on a radio or a telephone that mixes up a voice so a stranger who picks up the signal cannot understand it. The sounds are still there, but they are thrown out of shape on purpose. At the other end you need matching equipment to put the voice back into ordinary speech. Armies, police, and people who wanted a private call used this for years. The older kind did not lock the message with a computer code so much as twist the sound, then untwist it. Today a lot of that work is done by secret codes on computers, and some people still call the box a scrambler even when the old mixing trick is gone. The word belongs to news about spies, radios, and safe phones more than to kitchen talk. Though actually the same spelling is also a for rough ground, and a tool for mixing eggs — those are different uses. This entry is the message-mixing machine.
