Scotty is the friendly name of a character in the Star Trek films and TV programmes: Montgomery Scott, the ship's engineer, the man who keeps the engines and the alive. Other characters call out to him when they need to be moved from one place to another in a beam of light, and the line the whole world remembers is 'Beam me up, Scotty.' Though actually those exact words almost never appear in the old show — people rounded the real lines into a , and the became more famous than the scripts. In English the name now stands for that engineer, and for the joke of asking someone to beam you up when you want to leave in a hurry.
