If something is scintillating, it is interesting, clever, and — it sparkles in the mind, not only with light. The older, more literal sense is giving off sparks or shining , and that picture is still there: a scintillating conversation feels bright and quick. People say it of talk, writing, a performance, or a witty person. It is and a little fancy; if you call a lesson scintillating, you mean it was anything but dull. In everyday chat many people would just say brilliant or really interesting.
