A schooner is a kind of sailing ship, built to go fast. books sometimes say “a ship with two sails,” but that is tidier than the truth. A schooner has two or more tall for sails, and the sails run along the length of the ship, from front to back — not the wide square sails of old war ships. The back pole is usually the taller one. These ships were common in the 1700s and 1800s for trade and fishing, because they needed fewer sailors than the big square-sailed ships. You still see them as beautiful old boats, and in stories. Though actually, in Australia and in some bars, a schooner is also a size of beer glass — same spelling, completely different thing. This word, as filed here, is the ship.
組成The word is attested around 1715; its origin is uncertain. It is said to come from a dialect word scoon, “to skim over water.” Some also compare shunt, “to make something move suddenly.” It does not split into clear English pieces.
