    A schoolmate is someone who goes to the same school as you, or who went to the same school as you in the past. It is the school that you share, not necessarily the same class or the same year. A sits in the same class; a schoolmate might be older or younger, in another room down the corridor. People use it for both now and then: old schoolmates are people from your school years ago, even if you were not close at the time. It is a normal, friendly word — a little warmer than 'someone from my school', and a little less official than alumni.
