    A schoolmarm, in the way people mostly use it now, is a woman they see as old-fashioned, strict, and easily shocked — someone who talks like a stern teacher even when she is not in a classroom. The word started as a woman teacher, especially in a small American school; that teacher picture stuck, and people stretched it to the character: prim, easily offended, quick to tell you off. It is informal, a bit mocking, and rather American. You will meet it more in stories and jokes than in serious school talk. Though actually, used of a real person it can feel — it judges her manners, not her job.
