- 1
A schoolgirl is a girl who goes to school. That is the plain meaning: she is a student, and she is female. People use it for girls in primary school and in secondary school; once she has left school, she is not a schoolgirl any more. Though actually, the word also carries a picture in some people's heads — a young girl in a uniform — and writers sometimes use it that way, which can feel small or old-fashioned. Schoolboy is the matching word for a boy. In careful everyday talk, girl or student is often enough; schoolgirl is useful when you need to say she is still at school.
