Scholarly describes anything connected to careful, serious study — the kind of study a university researcher does. A scholarly article or book is written carefully, checked for facts, and usually harder to read than something written for the general public, because it uses careful, exact language instead of simple language. A person can also be called scholarly, meaning they love serious study and reading, and often come across as quiet and thoughtful because of it.
