Schnapps is a strong drink with alcohol in it. The word came into English from German. In German, Schnaps is usually a clear, very strong drink, often made from fruit: you pour a small glass, and it feels hot as it goes down. In English, though actually, people often use schnapps for a sweeter, bottle you see behind a bar — peach schnapps is the famous one, and it goes into mixed drinks. That English kind is still alcoholic, but it is not always as fierce as the German kind, and it tastes much more like fruit or candy. So one word covers a tough German drink and a sweeter mixer.
