Schmancy means expensive and fashionable in a way that is meant to impress — and the speaker does not like that show. Informal, a teasing put-down. A schmancy restaurant has gold spoons and tiny plates; a schmancy hotel has a fountain and staff who bow too much. The word says “look how fancy,” with a little laugh. You hear it a lot in the doubled phrase fancy-schmancy, which makes the tease even clearer. It is about showing off, not about whether the thing is well made.
