Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that can last for years. A person with it may hear voices other people do not hear, believe things that do not match what is happening around them, or find that thinking and feeling do not line up with everyday life. It is a doctor’s word. Though actually, it is not “having two people inside one body” — that is a different condition, and mixing the two is the most common mistake. The name was built from Greek pieces meaning “split” and “mind,” but doctors today do not mean the person is two people. They mean thoughts, seeing, and feeling can come apart from the shared world. Use the word with care; it names real pain, not a funny or personality.
