Schist is a kind of rock that has been pressed and folded inside the earth until it wants to break into thin, flat pieces. You can often see shiny layers in it, and walkers find it on mountain paths where the stone comes away in flakes. It is a rock-scientist’s word. It is not the same as slate, though both split; schist is usually rougher and more sparkly. The name itself is about that splitting.
