Scheherazade is the woman who tells the stories in The Arabian Nights (also called One Thousand and One Nights; in Chinese you may know the book as 《一千零一夜》 or 《天方夜譚》). In the frame story, a king marries a new wife and has her killed the next morning. Scheherazade marries him anyway. Each night she starts a tale so interesting that he lets her live until tomorrow so he can hear the end — and the next night she does it again. She keeps this up for a thousand and one nights, and he changes. People use her name for a clever who buys time, and for music: Rimsky-Korsakov wrote a famous piece called Scheherazade. A close pronunciation is “shuh-HAIR-uh-zahd.” Though actually, English spelling came through German and Russian from Persian, so older books also write Sheherazade or Shahrazad. Same , restless letters.
