Scampi is a food word, used a lot in Britain. On a menu it means large prawns — sea animals like big shrimp — coated in breadcrumbs and fried in hot oil until they are gold and crunchy. In British pubs you often get scampi with chips and lemon. Though actually, the animal in classic scampi is often the langoustine, a small lobster-like creature, not just any prawn. Many kitchens still use prawns, and diners still call the dish scampi. The word came in as a plural from Italian, but in English people treat scampi as the name of the dish, so "some scampi" is normal. Americans more often say fried shrimp. And though actually, American menus stretch the word in another way: "shrimp scampi" is usually shrimp in garlic butter, often with pasta — not the fried breaded dish at all. You will see both kinds of English on Western menus in Taiwan.
