Scabies is a skin disease. Tiny mites — creatures much smaller than a fly, more like little insects than worms — go into the skin and make it badly, often at night, often between the fingers or on the wrists. It spreads by close skin contact. It is a medical word, not a joke, and not the same as ordinary scabs from a cut. Doctors treat it with cream or medicine; you cannot just wait for it to heal like a . The word looks plural because of the -es, but we still say scabies as the name of the illness (“She has scabies”), not “a scaby.”
