To saunter is to walk slowly, with no hurry, in a way that looks easy and sure of itself — as if you had all the time in the world, and perhaps as if you wanted people to notice that. It is prouder and cooler than a tired shuffle, and a little more of a show than a plain stroll, though people do stretch it to mean any slow, relaxed walk. You can also use it as a noun: a saunter through the park means a walk of that kind. It is slightly or newspaper-like; on the street many people would just say stroll or wander. Nobody is in a rush when they saunter. If you are late and pushing through a crowd, that is not this word.

組成Unclear. It has meant “to stroll” since the 1660s; the noun “a stroll” is later (1828). It likely grew from an older word meaning “to muse,” from late Middle English santren, whose own origin is unknown. People have guessed at Anglo-Norman sauntrer (from a French verb about taking risks) and at German and Dutch stroll-words; those are competing theories, and a major dictionary calls the French idea unlikely.
