    A satphone is a satellite phone: a special telephone that sends and receives its signal through a satellite moving around the Earth, not through an ordinary mobile tower. Journalists, sailors, mountain rescue teams, and people after disasters use them when normal phones have no signal. The word is informal shop-talk. In careful writing you still see satellite phone. Satphones are often and expensive, and the call can sound a little delayed. Though actually, this is not a smartphone app and not a cheap everyday mobile. It is hardware, and it usually needs a clear view of the sky.
