Sassafras is a tree that grows in North America, and there are related trees in Asia too. People notice the leaves: on one tree you can see leaves with one part, two parts like a mitten, and three parts. The roots have a strong, sweet smell. For a long time people used those roots to flavour drinks and food — that old smell is part of the story of root beer. Though actually, shops in the United States mostly stopped putting the old sassafras root oil in food and drink, because they worried a bit of the plant was not safe; the name and the idea of the taste live on more than the original recipe. You may also meet dried sassafras leaves as a powder in some cooking from the south of the US.
組成From Spanish sasafrás, possibly from Latin saxifragus (“stone-breaking”), from some plants growing in cracks in rock. Scholars are not sure this is the true story.
