    To sass someone is to talk back in a rude, sharp way — usually to a parent, a teacher, or someone else you are supposed to show respect. It is informal, and you hear it a lot in American English. You can use it as a verb (“Don’t sass me”) or as a noun (“Don’t give me that sass”). It is not a swear word, but it is not polite. Grown-ups often say it when a child answers with a bold mouth. Though actually, among friends “she’s got sass” can even sound like a compliment: she is not quiet, she speaks up. The older word behind it is sauce, in the old sense of “cheek,” not the thing you pour on food.
