Sasquatch is another name for Bigfoot: a large, hairy animal that walks like a person. Some people in the forests of the northwestern United States — and over the border in western Canada — say they have seen one. Scientists have not found proof that it is a real animal, so for most people it lives in stories, jokes, and TV, not next to bears and deer. “Bigfoot” is the everyday English name; “Sasquatch” sounds closer to the old local name, and you will hear it in news stories and folklore. The word was borrowed from Halkomelem, where it means “hairy man.” It is not the same as the Yeti, which belongs to stories about the high mountains of Asia.
