The SAS is a British military force trained for secret and dangerous work: small teams, rescue, spying, jobs far from a normal battlefield. The letters stand for Special Air Service, a name from its early days. In English news, people say “the SAS” as if it were a proper name. The tone is serious; films and headlines have made the group famous. Though actually, the same three letters are used for other things in other places (an airline, for example), but in British English “the SAS” almost always means this force. Talk about “the SAS,” not “an sas.”
