Sarsaparilla is a sweet soft drink with no alcohol, dark and a little spicy, in the same family of tastes as root beer. dictionaries often say it is made from the root of the sassafras plant; the name itself comes from another climbing plant whose root went into old medicines and sodas. In real shops the two get mixed, and what is sold as sarsaparilla is often close to root beer. It is old-fashioned in Britain and America: you meet it in cowboy films, old stories, and a few soda brands, not in every café. In Taiwan, the drink people actually know is 沙士. People often say the first part as sass- or sahss-, as if the first r were not there — that is normal. Occasionally someone puts a tiny extra sound in, or swallows another; the spelling looks harder than the way most people say it.
沙士(台灣的沙士汽水,如黑松沙士;和疾病 SARS 不是同一個詞)
組成From Spanish zarzaparrilla. The first piece may go back, through Spanish zarza (“blackberry bush”), to Basque. English often drops the first of two r-sounds (as in February), which is why the start so often sounds like sass- or sahss-.
