A sarong is a long piece of cloth you wrap around your waist so it hangs like a loose skirt. You do not it into a skirt first; you wrap it, then tuck or tie it so it stays up. People in Malaysia, Indonesia, and nearby places wear it at home, at the market, at the beach, and at ceremonies. Men and women both wear it, though the cloth, the pattern, and the way you wrap it can be different. In English, and shops also say sarong for a beach wrap that looks similar, even when it is not the everyday cloth of those countries — a looser use, though actually quite common. It is an ordinary word, not slang and not fancy. You will see it in travel writing and on clothing labels.
