1. 1

Sarge is a short, spoken way of saying sergeant. Soldiers and police officers use it to address a sergeant, often as if it were a name: “Yes, Sarge.” You also hear it in films and TV. It is informal. You would not write sarge on an official form, and you would not use it for a high officer such as a captain or a general. It can sound friendly, or brisk, depending on the voice. In writing, people often give it a capital S when it stands in for the person’s title. It is not a separate rank; it is sergeant in work clothes.

    • Sure, the echoes of PUA raise concerns and I have no doubt Saturday Sarge has its fair share of men just wanting to pick up women for sex (Phil says in the four years he's sarged he's only slept with about 10 – the same amount another sarger says he's slept with in the last six months).
