Sardinia is a large island in the Mediterranean Sea, west of the Italian mainland and just south of . It belongs to Italy — though actually it has its own old language, Sardinian, and many people there feel Sardinian first. Italy’s name for the island is Sardegna; English uses Sardinia. , the neighbour to the north, is French, so the two islands look like a pair on the map but are not the same country. You meet the word in geography, travel, and history, not as an everyday verb or adjective. It names one place.

組成The English name comes from Latin Sardinia and Ancient Greek Σαρδώ (Sardṓ). Those names are older than Rome; they likely come from a local pre-Roman word, something like *sard or *shard. Some scholars connect this to the Sherden or Shardana, one of the Sea Peoples. A Phoenician inscription from Nora, from the 9th century BCE, already calls the island Shardan. In English the word does not split into smaller living pieces.
