1. 1

Sanskrit is a very old language of India. A great deal of Hindu prayer, classical Indian poetry, and the first big books of Indian thought were written in it. People do not grow up speaking it at the kitchen table now — though some still learn it, rather as some people learn Latin — and many living languages of India still carry its words. In English you meet the name when someone talks about yoga, old Indian stories, or the history of languages. Scholars treat it with respect because so much was written in it so long ago. It is a language, not a religion.

    • The Sanscrit language, whatever be its antiquity, is of a wonderful structure; more perfect than the Greek, more copious than the Latin, and more exquisitely refined than either, yet bearing to both of them a stronger affinity, both in the roots of verbs and in the forms of grammar, than could possibly have been produced by accident; so strong indeed, that no philologer could examine them all three, without believing them to have sprung from some common source, which, perhaps no longer exists... - Sir William Jones, 2 February, 1786, at the Asiatick Society.
