A sandtrap is a scooped-out hollow on a golf course, filled with loose sand. If your ball lands in it, you are in trouble: the club sinks into the sand, and it is hard to lift the ball back onto the grass. Golf people also call this a bunker; sandtrap (often written as two words, sand trap) is the everyday name, a little less official. It is only this golf meaning in ordinary talk — not a trap for animals, and not the sandpit children play in. Players try to stay out of them; landing in one usually costs extra strokes. Though actually, on some courses the sand is so fine and deep that even a good player is glad just to get the ball out, never mind near the hole.
