The Sandinistas are a left-wing political group in , in Central America. “Left-wing” here means they wanted to take power away from a rich ruling family and change the country for poorer people. Their full name is the Sandinista National Liberation Front. In 1979 they fought and pushed out a dictator called Somoza, then they ran the country. The United States was strongly against them: it sent money, weapons, and training to a right-wing fighting group called the Contras. That is the war many people mean when they talk about in the 1980s.
