An electric tool for making a surface smooth, especially wood. A rough sheet — sandpaper — is fixed to the bottom, and a motor moves it very fast, either spinning in circles or shaking back and forth, so it rubs away the rough top of the wood far quicker than a hand could. There are named types you will see in a hardware shop: an orbital or 'random orbit' sander for general smoothing, a belt sander with a loop of sandpaper for taking a lot off fast, a detail or corner sander with a pointed pad for tight spots. The word can also just mean a person who does the sanding, since '-er' works for both people and machines, but in real speech the machine is what people mean. One extra sense to know if you read the news in cold countries: a sander is also a truck that spreads sand or grit on icy roads in winter. That one is common in Canada and the northern US and has nothing to do with woodwork — it is the older, plainer meaning of 'one that sands', that is, one that puts sand down.
組成sand + -er. Here 'sand' is being used as a verb — to sand something is to rub it smooth — and '-er' means the thing or person that does it. That verb comes from sandpaper, paper coated with sand-like grit.
