To clean or cut into a hard surface by firing sand at it very fast, using a machine with an air hose. The sand hits the surface again and again and takes off the top layer — rust on metal, old paint on a door, dirt and black smoke marks on an old stone building. It is a verb most of the time ("they sandblasted the wall"), and you will also see it as a noun for the stream of sand itself, and as "sandblasting" for the work. Two useful things about it. First, it does not only clean — it also carves. Glass with a cloudy white pattern on it has usually been sandblasted: the sand roughs up the parts the worker wants to hide, so light cannot pass through clearly. Second, the sand is often not sand any more. Real sand dust is bad for workers' lungs, so many places now blast with tiny bits of glass, metal or even walnut shell — but people still say "sandblast", because that is the name everybody knows. This is a workshop and building-site word, not an everyday one. Outside that work, people mostly meet it in one loose use: a strong wind full of sand or snow feels like it, so you hear "my face was sandblasted by the wind" or "the desert wind sandblasted the road signs". That use is a picture, not machinery, and it always means something rough hitting you hard from the front.
