A sampan is a small boat used in China and much of Southeast Asia, on rivers and along the coast. It is usually simple, often with a flat bottom so it can work in shallow water, and some have a little roof or mat shelter. People use them to fish, to carry goods, or even to live on. It is not a big sailing ship. Though actually, English speakers sometimes point at any small Asian work-boat and say sampan, a bit loosely — the tidy picture is “small, local, often wooden.”

組成From Sinitic, likely Cantonese 三板 (saam¹ baan²) or Hokkien 舢板 (sam-pán). The old name pictures a small boat made of a few boards.
