Samoa is a country in the South Pacific. The two big islands are Savaiʻi and Upolu, and the capital is Apia. Until 1997 it was called Western Samoa. That old name was doing a job: it marked this Samoa as the independent country, not the nearby islands called American Samoa, which belong to the United States. People mix the two up all the time, on maps and in the news. English uses Samoa for the country, and for the people, the language, and things from there. Though actually, for a small country it has a very big sporting name — especially in rugby — so many students meet the word on a shirt before they meet it on a map.
