Same-sex is an adjective for a couple, a relationship, a marriage, or a partnership of two men or two women. You will see same-sex couple, same-sex marriage, same-sex relationship. It is a calm, newspaper-and-law word: it names the pairing, not a person’s whole identity. Someone may also say gay, lesbian, or queer about people; same-sex usually sits in front of couple, marriage, attraction, and so on. It includes two women, not only two men — students sometimes hear only the male picture and miss that. Though actually, sex here means male or female, the older school sense, not “sexual activity,” even though of course a relationship may be sexual. The is normal in careful writing. In Taiwan this is not a rare foreign idea: same-sex marriage has been recognised in law since 2019, so the phrase turns up in news and in ordinary talk about families.
