Samba is a fast, bouncy dance from Brazil, and also the music you dance it to — drums, a strong two-beat feel, bodies marking the rhythm. The picture most of the world has is Carnival in Rio: huge crowds, bright clothes, samba schools parading. You can also samba as a verb: to samba is to dance it. Though actually, “samba” is not one tidy step. In Brazil there are many kinds, some for the street, some for partners in a club; the ballroom samba you meet in dance-sport class is a polished international version, cooler and more counted than the street. The word came into English from Brazilian Portuguese, and before that from a Bantu language in Africa — Brazil’s samba grew in Afro-Brazilian life, not in a European ballroom. It is a cheerful, physical word; people stretch it a little for any Brazilian party rhythm, which native speakers from Brazil may find too loose.
