Salford is an industrial city in northwest England, right beside Manchester — so close that visitors often think they are still in Manchester. It grew with mills, factories, and docks on the ship canal. The painter L.S. Lowry lived and worked around here; his pictures of thin “matchstick” people and factory chimneys are often pictures of Salford and the towns next to it. Though actually, the docks and mills are not the whole story now: the old quays have been rebuilt, and parts of the city look new. It is a place name with a capital S. You say Salford, not the Salford.
