Salesmanship is the skill of persuading people to buy things as part of your job. It is not only knowing the product. It is how you listen, how you explain, and how you make someone feel they want what you have. Companies still train people in it; older business books use the word a lot. People also stretch it: if you are good at “selling” an idea, not a thing, someone may say you have salesmanship. Though actually, it can sound a little old, or a little teasing — “That’s some salesmanship” may mean “You talked well, but I can see the trick.” In everyday talk many people now just say sales skills, or that someone is good at sales.
