A salesclerk is someone who sells things in a shop: they greet you, find your size, take your money, fold the bag. It is especially American English, and it is usually written as one word. British English more often says shop assistant or sales assistant. Clerk here does not mean a quiet office person who files papers (though clerk can mean that in other jobs). In a store, the clerk is the person on the floor or behind the counter. The word is ordinary, a little old-fashioned in some regions — many Americans now just say salesperson or associate — but you will still see salesclerk on signs and in older writing. It does not tell you the person’s gender.
