A salaryman is not simply “a man who gets a salary.” In English it names a very particular figure, especially from Japan: a man in a company suit who works long office hours, is loyal to one firm, and is paid a monthly salary rather than by the hour. English borrowed the idea from Japanese. Japanese had already built サラリーマン (sararīman) out of English-looking pieces, salary + man — a wasei eigo, a “made-in-Japan” English word. English then took that Japanese word back. So when newspapers say salaryman, they are usually painting that Japanese office world: packed trains, late nights, after-work drinks, a life folded into the company. You can stretch it a little for a similar man in Korea or Taiwan, but it still carries that Japan-office smell. It is a noun, a bit journalistic, and it is about a type of person, not a job title you put on a door.
