Saigon is the old name for the big city in the south of Vietnam that maps now call Ho Chi Minh City. When Vietnam was split in two, Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam. The city was badly hurt in the Vietnam War, and after 1975 the official name changed. Though actually, many people still say Saigon — Vietnamese people among them, and older people in Taiwan — especially when they mean the old centre, the food, or the city as they remember it. Official English uses Ho Chi Minh City; everyday talk often does not. The English name was borrowed from Vietnamese Sài Gòn.
